Palomino up the Road

My neighbors, Bob and Toni Brantley's, horse. I once again used a black/white infrared and color blend. I plan to re-shoot this shot when trees are in bloom and stars are more visible with a moonless sky.

Can't resist a warm night in February.

Midnight in Infrared BW/Color Blend

A February snow scene. I like the way the stars are peeking through the clouds. A 30-second exposure, inspired by a Yahoo article of long exposure night shots that look like day time. This time I used Photoshop plug-in filters to make an infrared black/white image and combine it with the original color shot for a muted appearance.

Clear Sky in Black and White

Not many clear nights these days. Finally got lucky last Thursday. Here is my horse, Fancy, bottom right. I tried a 30 second exposure trying to get a day time look, as a popular article on Yahoo.com this week featured photos of night shots that looked like day time. I needed a longer exposure to do that and presently don't have a cable release for my Canon 7D.
The horse was motionless for 30 seconds; she must have been sleeping. Black and white seemed a better fit for this image, as a security light in the foreground gives the color image an unusual hue. Black and white is a different look and one I like.

Constellation Orion

Happy New Year!
Challenge: a great shot of Orion with a horse! And I succeeded last night. Orion is so dominate in the winter sky and I wanted to capture it for this blog. This shot was taken in front of a pond and I like the way the night sky is reflected in the water. This is the violet color to the horse's left in the photo.

About 25 degrees F last night. I stayed warm with my new UnderArmor tights and used my new flashlight to bounce light from the ground (Christmas presents that come in very handy for chilly night photography.).

And Pepe stayed with me for this photo, while all our other horses ran away. Pepe's buckskin color really works well and is more visible for night shots. Thanks to Pepe!

Nighttime Snowflakes

Christmas Eve and snowflakes for western Kentucky. Couldn't resist grabbing my camera and heading out in the quiet of the early evening surrounded by huge falling snowflakes.

This time, I used my flash, set at -3. Of course, the horses always surround me to see what I'm doing. So in the darkness, I focused on Midnight. I love the way the flash reflects each snowflake.

Clouds during last week's lunar eclipse and no horse and Geminid meteors in the same frame from the week before. So, a fun shot like this was a great early Christmas present for a night equine shooter!

Enjoy and happy holidays!

Pepe

Finally, a clear night in December! And high 30s F! Couldn't stay inside. On this shot, I got my brother-in-law's buckskin quarter horse. I figured he would appear well in a low light shot with his light coat. I had to feed him in front of our barn to get him to stand still for the photo. I whirled a flashlight around on the ground next to my tripod: perfect light and no harsh shadows behind Pepe. The stars behind the barn did not show as well in the shot, but I love the little cluster of stars that can be seen in the top right. Any astronomy buffs know the name of that star system?

Looking forward to tomorrow night and praying for clear skies. The Geminids Meteor showers. Wish me luck.
